The Story (As Old As Stories Get)
You probably know the bones of it from school. Odysseus, king of Ithaca, fights in the Trojan War and then takes the longest way home in recorded history. Gods interfere. Monsters appear. His cunning and his humanity get stretched to the breaking point. That is the whole plot, and it has worked for roughly 2,800 years, so Nolan wisely did not try to fix it.
What he does instead is make it physical. Storms feel wet. Ships feel small. The Cast Carries the Voyage
Matt Damon plays Odysseus as a man who is brilliant and exhausted in equal measure. This is not a shiny hero. This is a king who has been away from home for twenty years and is running out of tricks, and Damon plays that weariness beautifully. His scenes with Tom Holland, who plays his son Telemachus, quietly wrecked me. A father and son who barely know each other, trying to close a twenty-year gap. Holland continues his remarkable run of playing young men carrying impossible weight.
Anne Hathaway and Robert Pattinson round out a cast with no weak link. Everyone understood the assignment. Nobody winks at the camera. The myth is played straight, and that sincerity is why it works.
What Works (Nearly Everything)
The craft is overwhelming. The sound design alone deserves an award. Ropes creak, waves slam, and the score swells at exactly the moments your heart needs it to. There is a sequence with the Sirens that I will not describe except to say the theater was so quiet you could hear popcorn settling.
The structure works too. Nolan cuts between Odysseus at sea and Telemachus searching for news of his father, and the two timelines braid together instead of competing. Both journeys are about the same thing. Getting home, whatever home means after everything has changed.
What Does Not Quite Work
The middle act sags slightly. There is a stretch of island hopping where one trial blurs into the next, and I checked my watch once. Only once in nearly three hours, which is honestly a triumph, but the sag is real. A couple of the mythological encounters will also confuse anyone who slept through the school unit on this. The film trusts you to keep up, and mostly that trust pays off, but a little grounding here and there would have helped.

The Odyssey is the kind of film people mean when they say they don’t make them like this anymore. Huge, sincere, crafted for the biggest screen available. It sits comfortably beside the year’s best, matching its 8.0 audience score and then some.
